6th Formers - Management Challenge Day

De Montfort University
Wed 11th July 2012, 9:30am til 4:00pm

Aimed at students in years 12 and 13 this event gives teams of 7 the opportunity to get a taste for finance within the Public Sector.

The games are valued by sixth form students and teaching staff alike; many of their comments from previous games can be found on the dedicated web page by clicking here.

A teacher from North Hykeham Sixth Form commented:
“Once again our students got a huge amount out of the day. We really appreciate the opportunity to put them in a challenging situation with the types of deadlines and issues that many people face in everyday work.”

The objectives of the game are:

  • to allow players to gain an insight into the issues facing public sector organisations, particularly those of a financial nature
  • to demonstrate the challenges of managing under time pressure with uncertain outcomes
  • to develop team and individual skills
  • to be fun and engaging
  • for CIPFA to gain an opportunity to introduce 6th form students to public sector accountancy and the Institute.

Students on Business Studies courses may particularly benefit from being involved, but the event is open to any students studying in (or about to be in) Years 12 or 13.

Teams will be supported and encouraged throughout the day by CIPFA students and members who have volunteered their time to assist with the game.

The game involves certain aspects of running a fictitious public body, with each school providing a seven member “management team” for the organisation involved. The management game is organised on a case study basis, allowing team members to participate as much as possible, as they each take up a specific role within the management team. The game is usually divided into two rounds, with the team producing a major piece of work in each round, either in the form of a written report or an oral presentation.

There are 6 team places available at the Leicester date – 11th July 2012.
