National Science & Engineering Week - Calling all STEM Ambassadors!

Various Schools Leicester & Leicestershire
Mon 12th March 2012, 8:15am

It’s that time of year again – We are organising a programme of talks & interactive activities in March aimed at widening students knowledge of the variety of careers available within the Science and Engineering sectors and are in need of STEM Ambassadors to volunteer and give talks during the week.

The talks give you as STEM Ambassadors the opportunity to speak to students for one lesson – approx 40-50 minutes on your specialist subject. We are looking for talks about the different careers in the Science and Engineering sector.

You can deliver just one talk during the week or more. We will take the bookings from schools, confirm details (including map) to speakers and accompany speakers if possible.

Here’s how it works:

  • We are looking for a wide range of speakers to give talks about various subjects and careers in sciences and their associated fields (healthcare sciences, renewable energy, space & astronomy etc) and engineering (civil, electrical mechanical etc).

  • Your talk could be a description of your job, a project or a typical day (preferably including a PowerPoint and lots of pictures) and it’s best if you can include an interactive activity – we can help with this bit!

  • It could include information about career opportunities and routes in your field.

  • Talks will be delivered in the schools across Leicester and Leicestershire to a target audience of 11 to 18 year olds.

  • A talk should last approximately 40-45 minutes (to fit into a 50 minute to 1 hour lesson and allow for settling down, introductions and questions at the end).

  • Audiences will usually be a maximum of 30 students who will have volunteered to be there (so they should be interested in the subject!). Occasionally there may be a larger audience, but we will check with you first that you are comfortable with this before arranging a booking.

  • LEBC will agree with you when you are available during the week before taking bookings.

  • LEBC will take the bookings from the schools, and the confirm the details with you (including a map).

  • LEBC can also provide advice on putting together a presentation for a school if necessary.

If you are available at some time during the week, and would be willing to help, we would really like to include you in our programme.

Please email [email protected] or Call (0116) 240 7000 to discuss the programme, or complete the Talk Registration Form and return it to Danielle.
