Wreake Valley Community College
Mon 27th June 2011, 11:00am til 2:00pm

To improve students’ understanding of the important of literacy (reading, writing and speaking) we are running a 5 week programme at Wreake Valley College in Syston with 20 boys. The Year 9 students (aged 13) have been identified by teachers as needing encouragement and support to develop their reading, writing and wider communications skills. Their current skills are graded as average, but they have a far higher potential.
Following sessions by LEBC that will introduce students to the importance of literacy, lead investigations into a wide variety of career aspirations and the styles of writing used in newspapers, the students would like to meet you and put their literacy skills to the test!

On Wednesday 22nd June students would like to interview you, to find out about:

  • Your Career Journey.
  • How you use English in your job.
Following this session students (in smaller groups) will write up a newspaper article, or creative story about the interviews they carried out and will then present these to the rest of the class and teachers. The articles will also be sent off to the local press and included in the school’s newsletter which goes out to all parents.

If you are keen to support, but can’t attend on the 22nd June then there are similar opportunities to be a guest visitor on Wednesday 15th June, Friday 17th June and Monday 27th June.

For information on timings and the sorts of questions you will be asked please contact Rachael Clarke or call 0116 240 7000.
