Wider Horizons April 2012

New College
Mon 23rd April 2012, 8:30am til 11:15am

Designed to broaden the scope and understanding of future career pathways and raise aspirations for the students, we are sourcing volunteers to get involved in this fun careers awareness session.

Year 7 students (11 to 12 years old) will initially ask questions about your career and try and correctly identify what you do by asking closed questions such as:
“Do you work in an office?”
“Does your job involve working with animals?”
“Do you use a lot of maths in your job?”
And many more…to which you can only answer Yes, No or somethimes.

Once the students have guessed correctly, you will have the opportunity to offer information, advice and guidance by sharing your careers journey with the class.

We welcome business volunteers representing a wide range of sectors including:

  • Science

  • Engineering

  • Law

  • Sports and Leisure

  • Catering

  • Hospitality

  • Finance and Banking

  • Travel and Tourism

  • Animal Care

  • Horticulture

  • Art, Design, Creative and Media

The main aim of this session is to raise students’ awareness of different areas of work. Students should take away greater awareness of job opportunities, and the ability to recognise and challenge job stereotypes.

Hardly any preparation is required before the day – we just ask that you bring along a prop or some photos that represent your area of work to show the students and use as clues to help them in guessing your job.

If you would like to volunteer for this fun and fast paced event please contact Fay Wilson:
